Leena Purri lives with her mum, dad and brother Sevi. Next door are the Prices, their son Jim and their daughter Dawn. Alastair Price, the older brother, left home under suspicious circumstances. Leena’s parents arrange a marriage to a local boy, Rajput Gowda, but Leena’s best friend, Pretti, elopes with Rajput. So Leena goes off to University where she meets Alum, but they always argue. Interwoven into Leena’s story is that of her neighbours, the Prices, who have a difficult relationship and a family secret. Their daughter, Dawn, becomes involved with Benji, an Asian street trader, much to the consternation of her mother. Leena helps us tell this story with the aid of her diaries.

"When third generation Asian girl, Leena, learns that her traditionalist parents have arranged a wedding for her with an Asian boy in whom she has little interest, a fascinating sequence of events is set in motion which shows how very different such family arrangements are within the culture and context of modern-day England with a lively, sparky young female who has ideas of her own about her future. The twists and turns of the ingenious plot, the well-observed characters and the pace of the writing will keep the reader captivated and absorbed throughout, while the novel’s resolution comes as a delight and a surprise. Strongly recommended". Robin Squires, author and scriptwriter.

Readers’ Comments
‘Firstly, the story. Excellent. Good pacing, strong characterization, interesting plot. Secondly, the packaging. The cover was poor (I thought it was a children’s book) and the inners need a lot of work. Oddly, on almost every page, there is an extra gap between paragraphs; I kept thinking there had been a time lapse. Very confusing. The inners are just a Word document and need laying out properly.’
Female reader, aged 53
‘A very enjoyable read. Once I got over the dodgy cover and odd formatting, I enjoyed the plot immensely. Leena – the hero – is a strong minded, thoroughly interesting character and I was rooting for her from the beginning.’
Female reader, aged 34
‘Anybody interested in how a traditional Asian family co-exists with a modern England will find this novel fascinating. It’s a quick read but the characters, particularly Leena and the mother, are very well developed. Plenty of pace too with a satisfying ending. Note to author: internal layout needs work.’
Male reader, aged 57
‘Short chapters, pacey novel. Looks at a number of interesting aspects to living in a traditional family. I think it might go down well with YA.’
Male reader, aged 25

‘A delightful read. Entertaining and thought-provoking.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
