Disclaimer: I picked up this Kindle book when it was offered for free.I really enjoyed this book. With no pre-conceived notions and no spoilers going in to it, I had no idea what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised as a great story unfolded, with interesting characters, well written, with scenarios that I can relate to from my past life of years ago.
It's written (very well) from a woman's perspective, too, which always interests me (as a man).
A tale filled with lots of sex and drugs and trance music, and making art and searching for higher consciousness and the meaning of life, while struggling to survive while crazily bopping around squats in London. Highly recommend.

If you love everything British and thought the American version of Harry Potter ruined the book, this is the novel for you. A coming of age story set in London in the 1990's, this novel follow Claudia and her friends as they reject their bourgeois upbringings and set out to become artists on their own terms. As they move into squats, go to all night dance parties and drop acid, they grow into adulthood holding tight to their dreams. If you lived in London in the 1990's you will love this book. If you remember the social movements of the 60's fondly, you will love this book. And, if you are in your 20's and looking for an authentic story that captures your experience, you will love this book. Enjoy.

I loved every moment of this realistic and fabulous tale of young people growing into their adult selves in London. They're trying to maintain artistic integrity and also to make a living. They're seeking new kinds of relationships with parents and older adults without compromising individuality. They are making new friends and falling in love. They struggle for independence and freedom from social, economic, and family constraints. Bravo. Gallin brings all her larger-than-life characters to vibrant life, so we're immersed in their intense sex-drugs-rockandroll lifestyle as well as rooting for them as responsibilities and dilemmas creep up on them, and some serious choices have to be made. Beautifully written, real and funny - this is a definitely a worthwhile read.
If you’re old enough to remember the 90s, you’re likely to be spellbound by this book.
There’s quite a few subjects contained within the story that will raise some eyebrows i.e. squatting, drugs, benefits, etc. But essentially this is the story of Claudia and her life in London during the height of the rave scene.
I found myself fascinated by the resourcefulness and simple lives led by some of the characters and it made me wonder about the materialistic lives so many of us live nowadays. On a personal level, I disagreed with the casual use of drugs throughout the story, especially with a child present, but I realise this was part of the characters’ environment.
The characters are written well, with a fair few making up the cast, some you’ll love and some you’ll hate. Overall, I felt this was an emotive read that will whizz you back in time and may divide opinion.
Set in the 90s. Claudia drops out of College and moves to London determined to become an artist. Her overbearing mother and straight-laced, older sister don't approve (of anything Claudia does). Her father, more laid-back, sighs and occasionally throws some cash her way. Claudia moves into a tiny artist's studio. She gets sucked into the Rave scene, smokes dope, experiments with sex, and drops Ecstasy. The story follows her life for about eighteen months.
Firstly, Ms. Gallin is an excellent writer. It's hard to believe this is a debut novel. Crisp, tight prose fit the era and deliver Claudia's life in the compelling, first-person narrative of a free spirit. The two BFFs Claudia acquires--`Q`, a lesbian photographer based in Holland, and Paloma, a classically-beautiful French film maker--are fun to be around.
The story reads like a personal diary as much as a tale told about the main character. Claudia's gradual slip down life's slippery slope feels quite natural, perhaps even inevitable. The recreational drugs and the company she keeps gradually chip away her standards until she reaches rock bottom--living in a squalid squat and having unprotected sex with an unstable alcoholic crack-head.
The party-scene, especially the Raves and the liberating effects of the drugs she and her friends take, led me to believe the author has some inside knowledge. The people who pop in and out of Claudia's life in the beautifully described settings in London`s East End feel real, even the unpleasant ones. The squats, and more particularly, the entitlement mindset of the people who live there provides a social commentary. But the author never offers an opinion. Rather, she lays it out there--this is what happened, this is why, this is how these people felt and acted, loved and fought, and struggled.
Perhaps commentary is the best word to describe the story an unbiased commentary of a slice of this woman's life and of a time and a loose community that existed in London in the 90s.
For me, the book was better for letting me draw my own conclusions about Claudia. I went along for the ride, voyeuristically, and had fun on the journey.
I Loved this book! Took it on vacation and couldn't put it down. It's curious, funny and has lovely, brilliant characters. I didn't want it to end, and am finding myself wondering what is happening with the characters!!
Go for a roller coaster ride back in time!
Though I never grew up in London, though Dance music never was my music and though I never lived in a squat, the various intertwining circles of my life in young adulthood touched these spheres enough to have many instances of flash backs and recognition to that time of my life. Thank you so much, Denise, for the serendipitous find of your book, the entertainment it provided and the spiritual trip down memory lane!!
